“But I don’t have one creative bone in my body!”… We’ve all heard someone make that claim. Heck, maybe you’ve even said it yourself.
But I’m here to tell you, you ARE creative!
Most people feel that in order to be considered a creative person, you have to be good at art, or crafts, or music. But you don’t have to be able to paint the world’s next masterpiece or write the next Top 40 Hit song in order to be creative. Creativity is not limited to artistic endeavors.
Simply put, creativity is problem solving. And it can be applied to all aspects of life.
Maybe you only have 4 ingredients in the kitchen, but are able to combine those to make a delicious meal. Maybe you’ve figured out a new way to file all those monthly household bills in a more organized manner. Or maybe you’ve gone as far as revamping an entire policy or procedure for your workplace, to make workflow more effective. These can all be considered acts of creativity.
Mindset Snowball Effect
Everyone has heard the quote by Henry Ford: “Whether you think you can, or think you can’t – you’re right.”
If you walk around believing that you, in no way, shape, or form, have any creative ability within you whatsoever, you’re never going to uncover your full potential.
BUT – Once you redefine creativity and realize that your everyday problem solving skills are actually a form of it, you’ll see that you ARE creative. Once you recognize that, you’ll consciously start applying it to other areas of you life, until you just keep gaining more and more creative confidence. One thing will lead to another, and before you know it, you will start feeling like you’re ready to tackle some artistic challenges!
Still Not Convinced?
Ok, you might not feel 100% confident that you can apply your creative abilities to artistic endeavors (yet!), and that’s totally ok. That’s what I’m here for! As I show you different projects and prompts/exercises, don’t let self doubt hold you back. Dive in and just try it!
Like anything, it takes practice to truly grow your creative abilities. It doesn’t just happen overnight. But the more you practice, the better you’ll get. And the better you get, the more you’ll want to exercise those abilities (there’s that snowball effect again!).
It’s inevitable that at some point in time, you will hit a creative wall. You will feel like nothing you do is right, like no idea you come up with is a good idea, or maybe you can’t even come up with an idea at all. When that happens (and it will happen), don’t throw in the towel! Creative blocks happen to everyone, it’s all part of the process. Climbing those walls and overcoming those blocks are just going to help you grow even more.
The goal of this “Uncover Your Creative” series is to not only help you find your inner creative, but to also give you simple tips to help get those creative juices flowing again when you do hit a wall.
So wherever you are at in your creative journey, be sure to stay tuned for upcoming posts!
